Raingutter Regatta
Boats will be given out by your Den leader who will provide more information on assembling your kit.
Please assemble your boat at home prior to arriving. The boat will be racing in water. It is advised that you waterproof your boat with either enameled paint or polyurethane spray.
Regatta Rules
Two scouts will race against each other at a time.
Each boat must start with the back of the boat touching the end of the rain gutter; the scout must hold it there with one hand.
When the starter says go, the scouts will propel the boats by blowing on the sail. No straws allowed.
The scout may use his hand only to upright his boat or to remove an impediment (e.g., if the boat is stuck on the gutter).
The scout may not advance the boat with his/her hand (or any part of their body or clothing). If a scout does so, he will be given a warning. The judge may require the race rerun.
Boat Construction Rules
You must use the parts supplied in the kit: trimaran hull, mast, sail, outriggers, and wood screws. The kit also includes assembly instructions and a sanding stick. The only other tool you will require to assemble the boat is a screwdriver.
The boat must be no longer than 7 inches in length, nor shorter than 6 1/2 inches in length. This means you can shorten the outriggers somewhat when shaping them, but you cannot add to the length of the outriggers.
The boat must be no wider than 3 3/8 inches–any wider and it may not fit in the gutter, or get hung up on the sides and go slow. The trimaran hull in the kit is only 3 1/4 inches in width. If your outriggers are flush with the sides of the trimaran hull, you’ll be fine.
No keel or rudder may be attached to the boat.
You must use the sail and mast included with the kit.
Decorations/additions: Objects such as sailors, pirates, cannons, etc. may be added. All such decorations must be firmly fastened to the boat and may not be placed in such a manner as to exceed the boat dimensions as listed above.
Important Information
Please do your best not to leave any food scrapes or trash in the park. We will pack out all garbage. Be sure to leave food/snacks secured as there are critters looking for food.
Please be considerate of others when it comes to leaving for the night. Low voices and flash flights pointed toward the ground when leaving the park after 10 p.m.
